Cecilia Kay (Lyons) Mathews

Cecilia Kay Mathews, 77, of Rushville, passed away December 25, 2022 at Flatrock River Lodge.  

She was born Sept. 29, 1944 in Indianapolis, IN a daughter of the late Esther Marie (Kirchoff) Chapman and Cecil F. Lyons. She grew up on her grandparents (Lawrence & Esther Kirchoff) farm and graduated from Freelandville High School in 1962. She was confirmed in the Bethel Church in Freelandville in 1958. She was active in 4-H, GAA, Choir (school and church) and band.

On Sept. 18, 1964 at the First Baptist Church in Greensburg, IN she was united in marriage with the love of her life, Audry “Budd” Mathews. They shared the next 58 years together. She and Budd had a love of animals that was known over the years.

She was baptized at the First Baptist Church in Rushville, IN and became a member of Ben Davis Creek Christian Church in Rush County. She and Budd volunteered with various church projects. She was Angel the Church Mouse for four and a half years after the passing of her dear friend, Jan Voiles. Cecilia retired from Pinkerton Security in 1999 and also was a past member of the Indiana and Rush County Genealogical Society.

Survivors include her loving husband Budd Mathews; a daughter, Tonia (Joe) Bunch; grandson, Austin Bunch; granddaughter, Kayla Bunch Hillebrand; great grandchild, Lyla M. Hillebrand; two brothers, James Chapman and Steve Lyons.  Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Brenda Vires and Mary Ellen Chapman, and a brother Donald Lyons.

Funeral Services will be held at 1 PM on Tuesday, January 3, 2022 at Todd Funeral Centre & Crematory with Rev. Darryl Cooper officiating. Friends are invited at 11 AM until the time of service. Burial will take place at East Hill Cemetery following the service. Memorials can be made to the Rushville Food Pantry.
