Claude Stephen “Steve” McCorkle, 77, the son of K.U. “Jim” and Aileen McCorkle, passed away on Friday, April 30th. Steve was born on May 15, 1943 in Rushville, IN. He lived most of his life in Milroy, IN at the family homestead, an old limestone quarry, where he spent his last days surrounded by family and friends.
Steve married Martha “Mike” Root in 1963, and after a separation of 10 years they reunited to enjoy retirement together. He is survived by his two sons, Scott (Tiffany) and Mark (Jeri), who from an early age were taught that stone comes from a quarry, gravel comes from a pit. He is survived by 7 grandchildren, Thom (Allison), Parker, Sarah, Emily, Frances, Andrew, Trevor (fiancee Emily); and two great granddaughters, Sequoia and Margot. He is also survived by 3 step children and 4 step grandchildren, Christie Spenser (Hunter), Dawn Johnson (Joshua), and Jeff Johnson (Ethan and Evan). He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Martha; his second wife, Karen; and his sister, Shirley Ann.
Steve enjoyed a career in manufacturing following his graduation from Ball State University in 1967. He thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He gave back to the community he loved, including as Fire Chief of Anderson Township Volunteer Fire Department, Reserve Deputy of Rush County Sheriff Department, and as a Rush County Council member. Milroy’s Takathemoke restaurant was his home away from home.
Visitation will be available on Friday, May 7 from Noon to 4pm at Todd Funeral Home in Rushville, IN. A small service will follow at 4pm. Friends are welcome to visit the funeral home from noon through the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to Anderson Township Volunteer Fire Department (PO Box 296 Milroy, IN 46156) or Our Hospice of South Central Indiana (https://www.crh.org). Contributions may also be left at Todd’s Funeral Home.
