Katherine E. (Ulschak) Smiley

Katherine E. Smiley 99, of Rushville, passed away Nov. 24, 2020 at the Flatrock River Lodge.

She was born Dec. 7, 1920 in Lefor, ND, a daughter of the late Nicholas and Elizabeth (Wehner) Ulschak.  She and her siblings grew up in North Dakota on the family farm during the height of the great depression.

She married Robert L. Smiley Nov. 4, 1949.  Bob passed away Jan. 17, 2002.  Katherine and Bob raised two sons together, and she was a den mother during the boys scouting days. She had worked as a bookkeeper in her younger years for Grolier Encyclopedia and also was a clerk at the former Miners Clothing Store in downtown Rushville.  She was a faithful member of St. Mary Catholic Church.

Surviving are her two sons, Robert Smiley of Valparaiso, IN and Curtis Smiley of Rushville; one sister, Marie Kuswa of Hesperia, CA.  Also missing her are four grandchildren, two step grandchildren and one great grandchild.

In addition to her husband, Katherine was preceded in death by two brothers, and four sisters. 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 AM Saturday, November 28, 2020 at St. Mary Catholic Church with Rev. James Brockmeier, celebrant.  Visitation will be from 9:30 AM until the time of the funeral mass.  Burial will take place at Rushville’s East Hill Cemetery.
