Richard A. "Dick" Sharpe, a beloved husband, father, grandfather and veteran, passed away peacefully in his hometown of Rushville, IN, following a brief illness. Born January 6, 1933, in Rushville, a son to the late William Sharpe and Neomi Shaw, Dick spent his entire life in the town he loved.
Dick was a proud graduate of Rushville High School, class of 1951 and he competed in several sports during high school. Following his graduation, he answered the call of duty and served in the US Air Force during the Korean War. His time in the service took him to Japan, where he represented his country with honor and distinction.
Dick married his loving wife, Sue Woods Sharpe in Rushville on July 28, 1972. Their marriage of 51 years was a testament to their enduring love and mutual respect. Together, they built a life filled with joy, laughter, and shared experiences. Sue was not only his wife but also his best friend and confidante, providing unwavering support and companionship throughout their life together.
Dick found employment at Cummins Engine Plant in Columbus, IN. He worked many positions and wore many hats before he retired in 2000 after 38 years of dedication the the company. He was a man of many interests, baseball, fishing, and his love for the outdoors was paramount.
In addition to his wife, Sue, Dick is survived by 2 daughters, Anna (Steve) Bentley of Zephyrhills FL and Robin (Brad) Phelps of Indianapolis, IN and a sister, Rebecca Sharpe of Rushville. His grandchildren, Brian, Adam & Nathan Bentley and Joshua Phelps and great grandchildren, Braylynn, Owen & Rory will also miss him. Many other family members and friends will miss him dearly.
Those who knew Dick will remember him as a thoughtful and loving individual. He had a knack for making people feel special. He is predeceased by his parents, sisters, JoAnne Glisson and Carolyn Smiley; brothers, Melvin, Billy Tom & Norman Sharpe.
A Celebration of Life and Military Honors will be held on Friday 12 PM September 15, 2023 at the First Presbyterian Church 226 N. Morgan St. Rushville, IN 46173 with Reverends Garrett Vittorio Shindler & Marena Vittorio Shindler officiating. Visitation will begin at 10 AM at the church.
