Sarah J. Sweet, 80, of Rushville, IN, passed away March 1, 2022, at the Flatrock River Lodge where she had lived for the last few years. Her girls were at her bedside.
Sarah was born in Rushville on February 15, 1942, a daughter of the late Nellie Irene (Robinson) Eickenroth and James Wesley VanSickle. She was blessed to be from South Pearl Street in Rushville. During childhood she lived in a house with a dirt floor in the kitchen. The residents in that small neighborhood were strong, helpful, and loving to each other.
As a child, Sarah and her little brother Duane were left with their father as her mother relocated to Green Bay, WI. An angel sister, Shirley, then raised them to adulthood. She reconciled with her mother and loved her dearly until her passing.
She married Lloyd Thomas Sweet in 1961 and they raised three daughters, Debra Carter (fiancé Doug Browning), Christy (Tom) Owens, and Susan (James) Todd. Six grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren will miss their Nan. Tom left us in 1995. Sarah then met Eugene McDermott in 1996. Their companionship spanned nearly 18 years together before he passed away.
Sarah was an excellent homemaker and mother. She and Tom made certain their children were well cared for and worked hard for their girls. Throughout her life she was most certainly a Christian and attended many churches with her children. The Salvation Army, First Pentecostal Church, Church of Christ, and First Southern Baptist Church were some of her favorites.
In addition to her husband Tom, she was preceded in death by ten brothers and sisters and one great grandchild. Several nieces, nephews, and friends are also reunited with her in Heaven.
A Celebration of Life will be 10:30 AM Monday, March 7, 2022, at Todd Funeral Centre & Crematory with Rev. Darryl Cooper offering words of comfort. Burial will follow at Rushville's East Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be 2-5 PM Sunday, March 6, 2022, at the funeral home.
