Virgil Herbert Obituary

Virgil W. Herbert, 87, of Rushville, IN, went to join his wife, sons and other family members in Heaven on April 24, 2023 at Rush Memorial Hospital with his loving family by his side.

Virgil was born in Rushville, IN, June 23, 1935, a son of the late Gust and Florine Niehoff Herbert.  He married Luzia Heis on December 26, 1964. They spent 58 years together and she went to Heaven on February 6, 2023.  He was a lifelong hardworking farmer.

Virgil was a lifelong member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Rushville, and also honorably served his country in the United States Army.  He was a member of the American Legion and the Eagles lodge. He loved life and he loved people. He was a very loving and giving person.  He would help anyone in need. He always enjoyed watching IU basketball games and the Indianapolis Colts.  He enjoyed pulling tractors every weekend for many years, and had won many trophies that he was so proud of.  He loved and cared for his family more than anything.

Virgil is survived by his son, Randy Herbert (Kim Flannery); three daughters, Marilyn (Kevin) Spilman, Claudia Bailey and Diana Carroll.  He is also survived by his brothers, Lloyd Herbert and Jerry (Rosie) Herbert; sisters, Louise Hayes, Patsy McVey, Carolyn Risk, Mary (Sheldon) Hoeing, Jeanie Hawley and Becky (James) Stewart.

Also surviving and missing Papaw Virgil are 16 wonderful, grandchildren. 24 super great grand children and six beautiful great great grand children. He was also very loved and will be missed by many nieces and nephews and his special buddy Audie Frazier.

In addition to his wife Luzia Heis Herbert, he was preceded in death by two sons, Marvin Herbert, and Bill Whittaker; two sisters, Angie Godar and Ruth Carr; one brother Walter; brothers in law, Robert Godar, Joe Carr, Darrald Hayes, Richard McVey, Richard Risk, and Gary Hawley; sisters in law, Shirley Herbert, and Ethel Herbert; lifelong family relative, Joseph Klein.

Funeral Schedule:

Thursday April 27, 2023  All are invited for the recitation of the rosary at 3:45 PM and visitation from 4-8 PM at Todd Funeral Centre in Rushville.

Friday, April 28, 2023  Military Rites will be conducted at 9:30AM at Todd Funeral Centre then A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Rushville with Rev. James Brockmeier. officiating   Burial will follow at Rushville’s Calvary Cemetery.
